Avoiding Investing? A Simple Plan to Conquer Your Fears.

A brand-new study—about women and investing—triggered a decades old memory

I’d just sold my first book—Prince Charming Isn’t Coming— to a publisher and flew to NY to meet my editor. As we chatted, I casually asked if she invested. An awkward silence ensued.

Clearly embarrassed, she muttered, “Oh no, I have no money for that.” I quickly changed the subject.

Yes, I invest! 💜 I look at my stock portfolio and dividends twice a year. Before I buy stock and after I purchase stock. Also do the same with my retirement fund. I look at it before I contribute and after I’ve made the contribution!

During the rest of the time I’m busy saving for these contributions and enjoying life. To anyone who thinks that investing is ridgid, boring or conservative, it’s actually a very bohemian thing to do! Gives you more options and choices in life and allows you to go with the flow.

There was a time I didn’t check my retirement fund for more than 7 years. To my horror, I discovered that the asset allocation that worked for me when I was very young no longer worked for me and ate up thousands and thousands of hard earned/saved dollars. The biggest, painful lesson I learned was that nobody calls you when you’re losing money on your account!!!

Luckily, I think I read an old newsletter of yours urging women to talk to a financial advisor. My ear went read talking to him on the phone, but he changed my asset allocation around and now I’m earning anywhere between 10-20% per year. This could have been entirely avoided if I checked my funds at least once-a-year! Why I didn’t check my funds more often is an entirely different story.
